Monthly Review in Brief

Another month, another monthly review. June in one word? Holy crap, so busy! Okay, so that was more than one word. I’ve been busy with several projects and I seem to be taking on more all the time! I’ve also started volunteering with the Kings County Museum, but more on that in a few months (hopefully!).

First, I’m just going to start with this…

My most profitable photo yet, winning a cash prize (well, pre-paid VISA card) of $100.

One of my favourite photos from June; part of my monthly review.

Monthly Projects

In an awesome change from last month, I was completely successful in all of my goals in June. Woo! I completed my usual ‘read two books in the month’ goal right at the beginning of the month (finishing off a longer read within the first day or two, and getting through the second in a day). I’ve fallen behind again as I’ve been so busy. More on that later, as usual.

Couch to 5K

My main goal for the month was to start, and keep up with, the Couch to 5K running plan. This is basically planned, voluntary torture that I put myself through 30 minutes a day, three times a week. It’s horrible, and I can’t imagine myself ever enjoying it. I also can’t imagine being able to “run” (I’m pretty sure my normal walking pace is faster than my ‘running’ pace!) for 25 minutes straight. However, on day 1 I could barely get through 60 seconds and now, on week four, I’m up to barely getting through 5 minutes. So… progress? I don’t have a way to use a fun app, like Zombie running or anything, so I used Audacity to clip together song snippets in the appropriate lengths to create a 25-30 minute ‘song’ for each different workout. I used classical music for the walking bits and fast rock for the running.

Cross Stitch

I focused on this more in the first half of the month, but haven’t touched it for a few weeks. I’ve just been so busy with everything else this month! When I did work on it, I continued to work on A Fairytale Castle. Getting it finished in time for exhibition is unlikely at this point.

Monthly review - Father's Day Weekend.

Father’s Day Weekend

Father’s Day also happened to be my mother’s birthday. On Friday I blogged about the weekend, so I won’t go back into it now. Go back and read that post, if you missed it!

Photography

The last weekend in June was the first time in about two months that I didn’t get out and shoot. I just couldn’t spend the time on a nice long walk or shoot and didn’t want to just ‘phone it in’ by going out and taking a quick snapshot of something.

Monthly Review - Broken Leg Theatre
One of the many, amazing acts at Broken Leg Theatre.

The biggest photo excursion was Father’s Day weekend, which I talked about above. Specifically, I enjoyed my second time shooting Broken Leg Theatre. I hope to be asked back a third time.

This was another month of new cameras. You can find out more in that Father’s Day post.

I actually presented talks twice this month! First, I spoke at the Kings County Photography Club regarding my trip to Morocco and working with The Giving Lens. The second talk was during a professional development day at work where I spoke about my history with travel and photography and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. There were also pretty pictures of my travels. I actually really enjoy presenting, so if you would like me to do something… :)

Yeah, I’m going to mention this again… This would maybe be a good time to remind you about my Patreon. You could help me buy supplies or do other interesting things! :D I also have some cards up for purchase on eBay. I’ll really start promoting these things later in the summer.

Reading

Read in June

Unflinching: The Making of a Canadian Sniper
An amazing book; I couldn’t put it down (which, considering I had to work and go to a meeting, was problematic!). Jody doesn’t hold back in discussing his mistakes. His writing is honest, easy to read, and humorous.
A must read for anyone interested in the origins of Middle Earth.

Currently Reading: Somme, by Lyn Macdonald

I’ve also created a reading list leading up to the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Monthly Faves

Monthly Review - Favourite Photo
Favorite Photograph – I’m actually behind on photo editing this month, so this is my favourite photo that I’ve actually got around to posting.

Favorite PostAbstract Photography

Favorite Share:

Favorite Purchase: A bunch of books toward that Vimy 100 list.

Interesting Things I Watched/Listened To: I really need to remember to make note of these things when they come up. It’s not really something I keep track of, or is easy to look up. I guess I’ll talk about the Jody Mitic Podcast. He’s currently an Ottawa City Councillor. Previous to that, he was a Canadian Sniper, injured in Afghanistan.
