Board Room Game Cafe

So, if you’ve been following along on my blog, you’d think we haven’t played games since June. Actually, that’s not far off the mark. Friend’s college schedule meant that we had to skip two or three months. On top of that, while I dutifully took photos and kept stats, I was just too busy to blog about them. Last month, we started to make up for it a bit with a regular game group day, including a 6.5 hour Firefly game, and a trip to the Board Room Game Cafe in Halifax with Friend and Friend’s Cousin. That’s what I’m going to blog about today.

Timeline Challenge

Trivia  |  Pick: Mine  |  Winner: Friend

I had the first pick and chose Timeline Challenge. I’ve placed the regular Timeline a few times and saw this board game at the cafe (and my local game shop) and wanted to give it a try. I actually did that the month before when I visited the cafe with my mum. I wanted to see how the game group liked it. They liked it. It takes the regular game (putting cards with historic events in chronological order) and adds different types of challenges to add more variety. You can use any regular Timeline set (or sets!) with the game, which is pretty cool.

It’s pretty neat. Part of me wants to buy it… but then, like Stone Age, I wonder if I should just leave it as a Cafe game.

Forbidden Desert

Co-operative  |  Pick: Cousin  |  Winner: the desert :(

Forbidden Desert is an interesting game that had us searching through the desert to find water and parts for our crashed flying machine. The desert, however, is a bitch. We died of thirst. It was a fun game. I’d play it again, but don’t think I need to buy it. (Although I totally wouldn’t turn down a free copy!)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Co-operative  |  Pick: Friend  |  Winner: the Scooby Gang (us! We won!)

Friend is a bit of a Buffy fan and has several related board and card games. I’ve only played one before. This time, we played the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Board Game. It’s a much more pretty game, and I found it much more fun to play. Needless to say the game went home with her.

Roll Through the Ages

Dice and resource gathering  |  Pick: Mine  |  Winner: Friend

I wanted to roll some dice. With “roll” as the first word of “Roll Through the Ages“, I figured it was a good bet, even though I’d never played it before.  In this game, players roll dice to gather resources that are needed to feed workers and expand your village. It was fun, although the math took a few turns to get right.

Joking Hazard

Party card game  |  Pick: Cousin  |  Winner: the game

Joking Hazard is Cards Against Humanity with comic art. Obviously Not Safe for Work. Players take turns being the judge, laying down a card and choosing the best/funniest/whatever response laid down by the other players. Both this game and CAH can be played with as few as three people, but when we do, the game plays as well. We throw in a random card from the game, which adds a bit more randomization. (At least, I don’t think it’s in the rules.) It’s actually quite hilarious how often the game actually ‘chooses’ a good card! Anyway, the game is definitely a better player than the humans, because it’s responses were picked more than any one else’s.

Ethnos

Deck Building  |  Pick: Friend  |  Winner: Cousin

Ethnos is a different kind of deck building game than I’ve played before. We drafted fantasy creatures, and card types, to invade regions and gain glory. It was an interesting game. I didn’t dislike it. Would play again. Would not pick.

Geek Out

Trivia  |  Pick: Mine  |  Winner: Cousin

Cousin always wins Geek Out, a geeky trivia game, but it’s fun to play.  I clearly need to watch more TV.

Friday the 13th

Card  |  Pick: Cousin  |  Winner: Friend

Friday the 13th is a super cute game! I love the art. Basically, you collect sets (or, more accurately, try not to collect sets) while trying to avoid penalty points. Another one that I would play but not pick.

Did I mention it’s super cute?

  1. A bit of a buffy fan? I think that’s been slightly misrepresented :) I’d pick 13th again, I actually considered it the next time there. I’d already forgotten roll through the ages. Thank heavens you’re keeping a record!
