7 Lessons Learned from Travel and Photography

You may have noticed that many of these 7 lessons learned from travel and photography are introspective. Strange, as I don’t feel that I’m all that introspective. I suppose that just proves what a great experience travel can be, and how important art is. My sixth lesson is almost involuntary.

Lesson 6: Travel and Photography Will Make You Think

Kehlsteinhaus
Kehlsteinhaus, (“Eagle’s Nest’); Bavaria.

In the summer of 2000, we took a trip to Bavaria. (Actually, we took two trips to Bavaria, but that’s beside the point.) It was on that second trip that I became a photographer, even if I didn’t know it yet. But there was something more to that trip. The view from the mountain-top retreat is spectacular; you can see for miles. It’s up there on my list of favourite places on the planet.

The thing is, Kehlsteinhaus was a 50th birthday present for Adolf Hitler. According to sources I read at the time, this was also one of his favourite places. That made me stop and think. It reminded me that people aren’t black and white; it made me think about what if’s – was there any way history could have turn out different? I am not suggesting I was having Luke-Skywalker-talking-about-his-dad feelings about the guy. The experience simply made me ask questions, to think about history and human nature. Deep thoughts on a mountain top.

Or, you know, maybe the altitude was getting to me.

Istanbul From the Rooftops
Listening to the call to prayer, in surround sound, from the rooftops of Istanbul, Turkey.

In 2015, I travelled to Turkey and Morocco – two amazing countries that are predominantly Muslim. Part of the Muslim faith is the call to prayer, several times a day, from the minarets of mosques. The area we frequented in Istanbul was surrounded by mosques and one day, we even climbed onto the rooftops to listen to the call to prayer. It was a moving experience each and every time we heard it. I am not religious, but I can image that if I were, the sound and the words would absolutely lead me to prayer.
