It was so long ago, but the memories hadn’t faded.  Some days they ran wild in his head, taking over so he couldn’t think of anything else; leaving his mind feeling foggy the scar on his chest throbbing.  He wondered if he would ever be able to completely move past that experience; if he would ever be able to hear a car backfire or a screen door crash without his heart racing.

There was one memory from that time that wasn’t entirely horrible: her face looking down at him.  He still had her, thank God – and he did, every day.

Five Sentence Fiction : foggy

Magnolias may be the big thing in Annapolis right now, but in Kings County people are all about the Apple Blossoms.  And just as Annapolis Royal had their Magnolia Festival, Kings County will be having a (much larger) Apple Blossom Festival later this month.  I’m sure you’ll hear more about that in the future.

Of course, having said that, this photo was taken at my parents’ house in Annapolis County.

For Mother’s Day, we took mum to Hall’s Harbour for a wander around the beach and a lobster dinner.  Well, a lobster dinner for her.  I don’t eat that!

One of the many things Annapolis Royal is famous for is their magnolias.  This weekend, they celebrate that with a Magnolia Festival.  We took mum down there today for a ‘day one’ of Mother’s Day.  We checked out the small, winter Farmer’s Market and took a guided walking tour around the town that focused on all the magnolia trees that have been planted.

The bullet pierced his flesh before he even realized they were aiming. He had expected death to be instant, almost painless. How long could someone live with a bullet to the head, after all? But the pain was instense and wouldn’t end and started to spread from his chest.
And he heard her calling his name. At first, he thought she was an angel but if he were in heaven, would he still be in so much pain?
Then he saw her standing over him and he felt a drop of rain on his face – or was it her tears? The world became a little less fuzzy and he saw reach out to touch him, before pulling away. She looked afraid.
“I’m terminal, not congious,” he told her, certain he was dying. She pressed a hand to his chest, drawing a scream of pain from him – and begged him not to leave.

I think the Elderberries is my favourite, but all the De Atramentis are scented and I’m not really all that interested in scented ink.  Especially as I don’t think it lasts very long (if you were wanting the scent to linger until read again).  It’s mostly just to stink purty while writing.

It’s one of those questions you asked your friends – back when you were young and stupid and bored: “What would you do if you only had a day to live?”

Now your answer is: “I don’t know…”

For some reason, through a storm of emotions, another memory floated into his mind and it calmed him.  He remembered that he loved cars – racing them; fixing them up; running his hands over the smooth, candy-apple red hood, cool mirrored chrome and supple leather.

The memory faded and he was back in the junkyard and, despite what was happening – even though he should be fighting back – he smiled and looked around.  It was a much better monument than a cold stone in a manicured cemetery.  If he was going to die, this was a good spot to meet his end.
